Days after Amitabh Bachchan and his daughter faced widespread condemnation for their advertisement mocking the professionalism of bank employees, Kalya Jewellers have decided to withdraw their ad.
While the Hindi ad featured Bachchan and his real-life daughter Shweta Bachchan, the Malayalam version had Manju Warrier acting as his daughter. The ad had invited wrath of social media users, many of whom felt that the negative portrayal of bank employees was in poor taste. One user wrote, “i urge to all bank and sr bankers plz take note of this ad how it is blaming the whole banking system.” Another user wrote, “shame on You for portraying bad image of bankers.. in the Ad… You have completely sold ur soul to corporates of india ignoring the sentiments of Bankers.” One user disparagingly wrote, “He has already sold his soul.”
All India Bank Officers’ Confederation, an organisation claiming to have membership of around 3,20,000 officers, had threatened to sue Kalyan Jewellers accusing it of “casting aspersion and hurting the sentiments of millions of personnel” through the advertisement.
Kalyan Jewellers on Sunday decided to withdraw the one-and-a-half minute long advertisement featuring bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan and his daughter.
“We sincerely regret the inadvertent hurt caused and withdraw the advertisement from all media with immediate effect,” Executive Director of Kalyan Jewellers, Ramesh Kalyanaraman was quoted by enws agency PTI.
He said, “we understand that the advertisement has hurt sentiments of some people including members of our esteemed banking community. Any such hurtful interpretation being drawn is unintended.”
“We state that the creative advertisement was a work of fiction and not a reflection of banking employees at large. Along with crores of Indians, we acknowledge the valuable contribution of the banking community to our country,” the statement from Kalyanaraman added.
In the ad, Bachchan and his daughter are seen alighting out of an auto-rickshaw before entering a bank, where employees are seen talking to them rudely and being dismissive. Finally, they enter the manager’s cabin, the father-daughter duo are met with an obnoxious bank manager.
When they explain their problem of having received a single month’s pension twice in their account, the bank manager makes no effort to recover the additional payment and, instead, ask them to enjoy the extra money. To which, Bachchan shows just how upright he is while admonishing the manager. He says ‘What’s wrong is wrong’ while making his intention clear that he was here to return the money.
The shooting for this ad had taken place in May this year as reported by Janta Ka Reporter.
