The DMK on Monday suspended its leader and actor Radha Ravi for slut shaming actress Nayanthara at a public function. Speaking at a film event on Saturday, Ravi, himself a veteran actor and president of Tamil Nadu’s dubbing union, had accused popular actress Nayanthara of sleeping around with men.

Ravi, according to India Today had said, “She (Nayanthara) can act as a ghost and as Goddess Sita as well. Back in those days, if filmmakers had a goddess character in the film, they’d go for veteran actress KR Vijaya. But now, anybody can play the role. Paatha udane kumbudravangalayum podalam, paatha udane koopadravangalyum podalam (We can cast those who are respected and those who sleep around).”

His comments caused huge outrage in Tamil Nadu with director Vignesh Shivan taking to Twitter to tag DMK Chief MK Stalin seeking his intervention. He wrote, “@mkstalin sir & @KanimozhiDMK Madame, both respected leaders have voiced vociferously against Pollachi Sexual Harassment case. Please , Why don’t you take stringent action against male chauvinist, crass sexist & bully Mr.Radha Ravi? Kindly acknowledge and take action.”

Sivan also sought to remind how Ravi was a serial offender and had faced MeToo allegations too in the past. He wrote, “In 2018, there was a sexual harassment complaint against Mr.Radha Ravi by a distressed actress, who feared to reveal her identity. He walked scotfree. A little later Mr.Radha Ravi scandalously & insensitively mocked at the #MeToo movement.”

He added, “In 2017, Mr.Radha Ravi made a crass insensitive comment about children with disabilities. It is men like Mr.Radha Ravi who perpetuate & glorify the violence against women & children.”

Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu too took to Twitter to express her disgust. She wrote, “This is disgusting beyond words. Who asked him about casting pre requisites and is he the president of character certificate association? This comes for one of the strongest actresses of the industry,I can only wonder what he might have to say about others.”

Singer and dubbing artist Chinmayi Sripada said that Ravi had expelled her from the dubbing union because of her MeToo allegations. She wrote, “Been waiting since yesterday for *some* sort of a condemnation from the male actor fraternity in Tamilnadu since yesterday. In this video Radha Ravi, President, TN Dubbing Union openly slut shames a female actor at HER movie’s trailer launch. And not. a. word from anyone. Yet.”

Here’s the video of Ravi’s controversial comments:

Responding to the outrage, DMK leader Kanimozhi wrote, “Every woman has a right to choose her profession. To judge or disrespect a woman’s choice is unacceptable. The DMK will not stand for any conduct which offends the rights, dignity and equality of our fellow human beings.”

Stalin too tweeted saying that Radha Ravi’s comments were unacceptable in DMK adding that his party cadre must express without indignity. Stalin said that action will be taken against those who were found to be guilty of violation.
