The Congress on Friday was left embarassed after it emerged that its latest list of candidates for Uttar Pradesh had a candidate from the rival party. The party has now replaced the candidate with a news anchor.
The Congress had announced a new list of candidates for Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat on Thursday night. Its candidates for Uttar Pradesh also included one Tanushree Tripathi from the Maharajganj parliamentary seat. However, soon it emerged that Tripathi had also been named as a candidate from Maharajganj by Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party. PSP is led by Shivpal Yadav, the uncle of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Shivpal formed his own party after leaving the Samajwadi Party.
Tripathi is the daughter of former UP Minister Amarmani Tripathi, who was jailed for killing Madhumita Shukla.
The Congress then had to issue a correction and released the name of a former TV news anchor Supriya Shrinate, who has left her profession to start her political career. Shrinate was an Executive Editor in ET Now channel.
The Congress on Friday also released a new list for Bihar, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh’s one seat. The party announced the list of 20 candidates for Odisha assembly elections.
On Friday, in a setback to the BJP, its sitting MP from Etawah, Ashok Kumar Dohrey joined the Congress in the presence of Congress President Rahul Gandhi. Dohrey was later named as the Congress candidate from Etawah.
