Congress leader praises PM Modi hours after Arnab Goswami accuses him of deliberately weakening P Chidambaram’s case

Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami on Wednesday night made a sensational allegation against lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi accusing him of helping the CBI while representing P Chidambaram in the INX Media case. The special CBI court judge had sent former Finance Minister P Chidambaram to CBI’s custody till 26 August. Goswami had said on his TV show on Wednesday night, “I don’t know what Abhishek Manu Singhvi has against Chidambaram because Abhishek Manu Singhvi obviously wants to happily ensure that Chidambaram is in jail for the rest of his life.”

He didn’t stop here. He added, “Anyway, I’ve heard of some professional rivalries between them (Singhvi and Chidambaram).”

Hours later, Singhvi was back in the news for his extraordinary praise for the prime minister as he wrote on Twitter, “Always said demonising #Modi wrong. No only is he #PM of nation, a one way opposition actually helps him. Acts are always good, bad & indifferent—they must be judged issue wise and nt person wise. Certainly, #ujjawala scheme is only one amongst other good deeds. (sic)”

Earlier Jairam Ramesh too had said that demonising PM Modi was wrong. Singhvi’s tweet was posted seemingly in response to Ramesh’s comments on the prime minister.

“He (Modi) talks in a language that connects him with the people. Unless we recognise that he is doing things which people recognise and which have not been done in the past, we are not going to be able to confront this guy,” Ramesh, a Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka was quoted by news agency PTI. Ramesh, who held Ministry of Rural Development in the previous Congress government at the Centre, added, “Also if you are going to demonise him all the time, you are not going to be able to confront him.”

Ramesh said that his party made fun of Modi government’s policies before 2019 Lok Sabha polls, ‘but it has turned out in all electoral studies that the Prime Minister Ujjawala Yojna is one single programme which has been able to connect him with crores and crores of women and given him the political traction which he didn’t have in 2014.’

The crushing election defeat in this year’s Lok Sabha polls has left the Congress as a divided house with leaders speaking in different tunes. The party came for heavy criticism for allowing the BJP to pass controversial Bills including the dreaded anti-terror legislation in the Rajya Sabha. The Congress also exposed itself on the issue of Article 370 as several top leaders supported Home Minister Amit Shah’s decision to do away with the clause in the constitution that gave special status to Kashmiris.
