Celebrity hair stylist Jawed Habib on Monday joined the BJP, 19 months after being made to apologise for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. Soon after he joined the BJP, Habib said that he had now become a watchman of the country.
“Aaj tak main baalon ka chowkidar tha, aaj mein desh ka chowkidar ban gaya hoon, (Up until now I was the watchman of people’s hair. From today, I have become the watchman of the country,” Habib was quoted by ANI.
Habib joining the BJP assumes significance in light of the raging controversy in September 2017, when the celebrity hairdresser had faced a massive backlash for a Durga Puja advertisement.
In the controversial ad, Goddess Durga was shown to be having a spa day. The Goddess, along with her children Kartik, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Ganesh, were seen at the Habib’s beauty parlour, while the caption read, “Gods too visit JH salon.”
Faced with growing outrage, Habib had issued a video apology clarifying that the ad was commissioned by Jawed Habib’s partner in Kolkata and no prior permission was sought from him.
Habib had gone on to add, “I don’t know what happened this time as they did not take permission. But whatever it is, he is my partner and ‘his mistake is my mistake’. It is a blunder and all I can say is SORRY!!”
A letter was also posted on the social media handle, in the name of Jawed Habib Hair & Beauty Limited, which read:”We never ever intended to hurt the sentiments of any community. It was done without our knowledge of the company by some local people in West Bengal. We undertake to remove all such advertisement material from the media.”
“If our ad campaign had inadvertently hurt anyone’s sentiments we apologise for that to the public at large,” the letter had said.
A case was also registered against Habib later.
India goes to polls in seven phases with the counting scheduled for 23 May.
