Congress party has slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for hiring the services of Bollywood actor, Amitabh Bachchan, to host the celebrations marking his two years in office.
Surjewala said, “One of the names featuring in Panama Papers leak happens to be of the honourable artist (Amitabh Bachchan). The investigation is on and we hope he is exonerated, but until it happens is it right for the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to hire his services for the celebrations marking his two years in office.
“What message will it send to the agencies investigating the matter? Does it not give a signal to the investigating agencies not to proceed against those who are being investigated for stashing black money abroad.”
Bachchan reacted strongly saying that he wasn’t hosting the event but was only doing a programme on Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao,’ which according to him was very close to his heart.
His tweet said, “this is misinformation, not hosting ..only doing a small segment on ‘beti bachao, beti padhao.'”
According to Times Now, Bachchan said that it was up to the central government to decide if it wanted to cancel the original invitation.
Sources in Congress said that the party would oppose any plans to have Bachchan as part of Modi’s two years of celebration.
A massive leak of 11.5 million tax documents had revealed the secret offshore dealings of several prominent people from around the world with as many as 500 Indians too being named in the leaks.
They included aides to Russian president Vladimir Putin, world leaders and celebrities including Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Iqbal Mirchi and Adani elder brother.
