‘Brand icon of Hindutva, Yogi for PM’ poster appears in Lucknow after BJP’s defeats in three states, Modi called jumlebaaz

Hours after BJP suffered defeats in three states, a poster calling for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to be made India’s next prime minister has appeared in Lucknow. The poster was put up by a group called Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena, promoting its planned religious conclave scheduled for next year.

The poster also calls to ‘bring Yogi to save the country’ with a hashtag #Yogi4PM. It goes on to add, “Modi is the other name of jumlebaazi (fake promises), Yogi is the brand icon of Hindutva.

The man behind the poster, one Amit Jani, slammed Modi while praising Adityanath for pushing the agenda of Hindutva. He said that the religious conclave in February will declare that Hindus will not vote for the BJP if Yogi was not made the prime ministerial candidate.

The poster assumes significance in light of the BJP’s defeat in three key states, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh on Tuesday. The Congress, which Prime Minister had pledged to make India free from, is now set to form governments in all three states. Intrestingly, Adityanath had actively campaigned in these states by pushing the Hindutva agenda. In one rally in Madhya Pradesh, he had asked voters to choose between Ali and Bajrang Bali (name for Lord Hanuman).

Many BJP supporters, who expressed their disappointments on social media, were seen blaming the party for junking the agenda of Hindutva and focussing on development. BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy too had tweeted, “I have always said that vikas is only a necessary condition for electoral victory but not sufficient. Lack of vikas can be compensated by real achievement on Hindutva and fighting corruption in winning election, but upto a point..”

It remains to be seen how the BJP reacts to this poster since this has the potential to cause a vertical split in the party.
