Box office: Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika has uphill task as first day’s collection turns out to be ordinary

Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi was released amidst much fanfare on Friday, but the first day’s box office collection turned out to be dull with the film collecting just Rs 8.75 crore. Friday’s earnings also included Telugu and Tamil versions.

Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “#Manikarnika picked up towards evening, after an ordinary/dull start in morning… #RepublicDay holiday [today] should witness a big turnaround… Sure, there’s appreciation, but it has to convert into footfalls… Fri ₹ 8.75 cr. India biz. #Hindi #Tamil #Telugu.”

The film had incurred a cost of a whopping Rs 125 crore to pull off a period drama on the life one of India’s famous freedom fighters, Maharani Laxmibai. The film had also courted several controversies over the alleged portrayal of Laxmibai followed by Sonu Sood refusing to reshoot his scenes, as requested by Kangana, who co-directed the film with Krish.

In contrast, Thackeray starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, which was released the same day, fared better as it colelcted Rs 6 crore on the opening day. Adarash wrote, “#Thackeray has scored in #Maharashtra specifically… #Marathi version has collected very well… #RepublicDay holiday [today] should help escalate its biz… Fri ₹ 6 cr. India biz. #Hindi #Marathi.”

The overall verdict for Mannikarnika was that while Kangana had impressed with her acting prowess, the film was let down by poor direction and even poorer dialogues, written by Prasoon Joshi.
