Actor Ashutosh Rana has thrown his weight behind Naseerudiin Shah after controversial godman Ramdev and actor Anupam Kher slammed him for expressing his concerns over the alarming rise in the incidents of right-wing terrorism.
Rana, a known critic of the hate politics in India under the BJP-led government, was quoted by news agency ANI, “Everyone should have a right to share their thoughts with their friends or other people without any fear. If any of our brothers or friends say something, we should not only listen to them but also ponder over it.”
“If someone is speaking his mind and there is a debate, will it improve the country’s economic situation,” he added.
His comments came on the same day as filmmaker Anubhav Sinha slammed his fraternity for its hypocrisy. Taking to Twitter, the Mulk director wrote, “We (Bollywood) don’t get together when SRK or Aamir or Naseer are trolled for just criticising their own society. But we do fall in line to sing a choir for GST cuts. Are we together or not???”
Sinha was referring to a recent delegation of the Bollywood that met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Filmmaker Karan Johar had tweeted after his meeting with Modi, “Would like to thank our Prime Minister
@narendramodi for the swift action on the GST rate on movie tickets….Great news at the year end! Thank you sir for your proactivity and support…..”
Ramdev on Sunday had said that Shah’s comments amounted to treason. He had said, “Naseeruddin Shah has earned his popularity due to love of common people. I have not seen religious intolerance. I, of course, see political intolerance. I think accusing India of religious intolerance is equal to degrading country’s pride… Labelling one’s own country with religious intolerance is akin to ungratefulness, disrespect and treason.”
Shah had said that the situation caused by the right-wing brigade in India had gone out of control. He said, “The poison has already spread. It will be very difficult to capture this jinn back into the bottle again. There is complete impunity for those who take the law into their hands. In many areas, we are witnessing that a death of a cow has more significance than that of a police officer.
Actor Anupam Kher, a known supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, had asked much more freedom Shah expected to have in a country where one could even “abuse” the army and “pelt stones” at soldiers.
“There’s so much freedom in the country that you can abuse the army, badmouth the air chief and pelt stones at soldiers. How much more freedom do you need in a country? He said what he felt like, that doesn’t mean it’s the truth,” Kher was quoted as saying by ANI.
