Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has often faced incessant trolling for his silence on crimes against women. He had come under heavy flak from MeToo activists including actress Tanushree Dutta for not siding with her. Weeks later, his lawmaker wife Jaya Bachchan has courted controversy by calling for the public lynchings of those who brutally raped a veterinary doctor in Hyderabad recently.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Jaya Bachchan said, “I know it’s a little harsh. But, I think these people need to be shamed in front of the entire country. People who have not done their jobs properly. These kinds of people (the accused) should be brought out in public and lynched.”
No sooner did Jaya make the controversial comments, social media users reacted with mixed opinions. While many agreed with her demand for public lynchings, others said that her comments were detrimental to delivering justice to the victims of sexual violence. However, there were some who posted memes on Amitabh Bachchan highlighting his helplessness in the wake of the controversy triggered by his wife.
#JayaBachchan stupid suggestion, Why she silent on nirbhya when mulayam said “”Baccho se galti ho jaati hai “””,We give punishment under law should be death punishment. pic.twitter.com/0kGt28nLRL

I totally agree with #JayaBachchan
These demons should be lynched brutally. Their skin should be pulled off and their bodies should be left rotten on roads. All those who are telling #JayaBachchan is wrong are all spineless losers with no sentiments. Bloody hypocrites https://t.co/OPgQf2zpdV— Mutant0605 (@mutant0605) December 2, 2019
Tho I’m strongly against any kind of lynching, it’s hard not to empathise with Jaya ji’s anger
Thr’s universal revulsion & outrage abt the yng #Hyderabad lady’s rapist-killers
The real solution: police/prosecutorial/judicial reforms.
Swift, certain justice is the best deterrent https://t.co/8hNprQUKqx— Baijayant Jay Panda (@PandaJay) December 2, 2019
These MPs are the problem! With lawmakers like #JayaBachchan , instead of improving the implementation of the law, asking for scientific investigations &special courts & fast trials she wants people to be lynched.
Absolutely bizarre! This will actually make he law &order worse! https://t.co/7IPEMpChzp— Tehseen Poonawalla Official (@tehseenp) December 2, 2019
A group of four people had raped a doctor on the outskirts of Hyderabad last week before burning her alive. The news sent shockwaves across India with many demanding strict punishment of the four culprits identified as Mohammed Pasha (truck driver) and his assistants Naveen, Kesavulu and Shiva.
