Yoga guru Ramdev on Friday said that he was silent on the issue of black money because the central government had failed to get it back to the country from foreign banks.
He told ANI in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain, “Kala dhan nahi aaya isliye is par baat karna band kar diya. (The black money couldn’t be brought back, therefore I stopped talking about it.)”
However, hours later, he appeared to have realised that his comments may be construed as damaging to the central government prompting Ramdev to quickly issue a clarification.
According to ABP, Ramdev later said that he was confident of the Narendra Modi government bringing back black money to India.
Last November, the Yoga guru had conceded that the menace of black money had increased under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
Ramdev, a staunch supporter of BJP and PM Modi, had said, ” yeh(black money) badhta hi jaa raha hai, yeh multiply hota jara hai. (It keeps increasing). People are stashing black money through tax avoidance as well.”
When reminded about Modi’s promise on transferring Rs 15 lakh to every Indian’s bank account, Ramdev said that ‘it was for Modiji to decide how soon he intended to fulfill his promie.’
The controversial baba had launched a tireless campaign against the then Manmohan Singh government on black money, but his silence over the issue in the last two years of the Modi government has prompted many to ask if his campaign was only to ensure electoral advantage for the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections in 2014.
During the UPA rule, Ramdev had estimated the volume of black money stashed in foreign banks at Rs 400 lakh crore.
Since Modi assumed office, Ramdev has largely been away from commenting on the political goings on. His tireless campaign and almost daily press briefing against the Congress government has now given way to his unflinching attention to expand his business empire Patanjali.
Patanjali, an FMCG company, has experienced phenomenal growth particularly during the last two years of BJP government at the Centre. Not so long ago, Ramdev had held a news conference to announce that his Patanjali empire had crossed the turnover of Rs 5,000 crore.
Yoga guru is now ‘omnipresent’ on TV channels endorsing his Patanjali products with his brand sponsoring a large section of news programmes on TV channels.
